Did you know that the United Kingdom is the world’s cider capital, consuming more cider than the rest of the world combined? The rich history of cider in the UK stretches back centuries, encompassing a fascinating blend of apple varieties, orcharding techniques, and cider-making knowledge. At Hydes Cyder, we cherish and respect this historical legacy and have embarked on a journey to bridge the past and present. We’ve combined traditional methods of cider production with a contemporary approach. To give our cider a modern twist, we’ve introduced a light carbonation that adds a refreshing effervescence to every sip. It’s a nod to the contemporary palate while respecting the timeless traditions of cider-making.
A Roman Beginning: 50 CE
Cider’s story in the UK begins with the Roman Empire’s arrival around 50 CE. The Romans brought with them a variety of apple types, innovative orcharding practices, and valuable cider-making expertise. This laid the groundwork for what would become an enduring tradition.
The Monastic Era: 600 CE
As Christianity took hold in the UK around 600 CE, monasteries began to plant apple orchards and produce cider. This golden drink served dual purposes – it was enjoyed by the monks themselves and sold to the public. Cider began to cement its place in the nation’s heart.
Norman Influence: 1066
The Norman invasion in 1066 introduced tannic apple varieties, perfectly suited for cider-making. The Normans not only expanded the orchards but also brought state-of-the-art pressing technology, significantly improving the efficiency of the cider-making process.
A Beverage for All: Centuries of Cider Love
Cider became a beloved beverage among both the gentry and the working class. Surprisingly, champagne cider was enjoyed in England five years before the birth of Dom Pérignon, the famous French monk. In 1633, Sir Kenelm Digby designed the modern wine bottle in England, using stronger glass that could withstand the pressure from bottle fermentation. This innovation was made possible by advancements in furnace technology in the Midlands, where coal was used as the heat source. The design of English cider-drinking glasses from that time also eerily resembled modern champagne flutes, featuring long, tall sides designed to hold the delightful bubbles.
